In Area Shelters

There are sometimes GSDs out there that GSRNE does not have in our own program (usually because we are full and cannot take it for further evaluation, or the dog is in a shelter and we have not been able to see the dog yet), but we are aware of their plights and want to help them by telling people like you about them. If a dog is at a shelter and you want more information about it, please call the appropriate shelter.

We have not temperament tested or evaluated most of the dogs in this list. These dogs often only have a week or two to live, due to overcrowding at shelters. We have no room for them. :-(    If you are interested in one, please call about these dogs right away, and please mention that you saw info about the dog on the GSRNE web site. Thanks!

Note: ALWAYS call first and ask if a shelter dog is still available, too. Shelters often do not update us when dogs are adopted or euthanized, we have to keep pinging them. So listings here can be a few days out of date, until we find out the dog is adopted or euthanized.

Please let the shelter know if you saw the
dog on GSRNE's website. Thanks!

Shane AKA Rusty - Senior GSD

 Central Rescue & Rehab
Wales, MA

info@centralrescue.org

Rusty has heart!

Rusty is a senior boy, we are estimating him at about ten years old. He is about 70 pounds but could use another ten to fifteen pounds to put him where he needs to be. He wants nothing more than to be with a human to call his own.

Rusty has been to the vet and had a full physical. He even had his hips x-rayed and the vet says his hips are great! Rusty was treated for lyme disease and is done with the meds now.

Rusty is developing degenerative myelopathy, his back legs may be wobbly at times and he will need medication to help keep him strong for the rest of his life.

r

Rusty's dedicated foster mom takes him swimming almost daily, and he loves his walks and play in the yard. People that first meet Rusty think he is much younger than his age due to his lively attitude outside. Inside the house, Rusty is a couch potato.

He loves the beach, and lake and plays fetch in the water like a young dog.

Rusty is good with other dogs, submissive with dogs exerting their dominance. He just walks away. He does love to play and interact with dogs that are non-confrontational. He has not been tested with cats.

Rusty would love to bond with a kind, compassionate and loving human. He would do well with someone who is retired, works from home or works part-time. Rusty would love a fenced yard because he enjoys laying out in the sun.

Rusty is good off leash in non-traffic areas - woods, lake, beach and the like.

Rusty loves head and neck rubs, and nuzzles his head into your thigh to let you know he is there. Rusty will be a loving, loyal and constant dog companion to a loving, loyal and constant human companion.

If you are loving and loyal and would like to give Rusty the forever home he deserves, please fill out our online application. Thank you for considering this wonderful boy.

Hello there.....My name is Dokken. I am an extra large, about 90lbs, Purebred German Shepherd Dog, with stocky German line structure who was surrendered to the shelter because my owner did not have time for me. I need to go to a home with a very experienced German Shepherd person. I'm a terrific working dog, and am extremely obedient and focused once my handler turns on my start switch. I am VERY toy motivated and will work hard for my toys. I am a "talker" too....You German Shepherd folks will know what that means....I will be receiving my rabies vaccination next Tuesday, August 19 and will be available after that for adoption but will be available for showings before that. Please call FMI BEFORE coming in to see me....626-3491

PRINCE

Taunton Animal Shelter
Taunton, MA
508-822-1463
paws4blue@aol.com

Approx 8 yrs, Prince is a fantastic boy! We named him "Prince" - because a prince is royalty - and our Prince is quite regal, handsome, distinguished and dignified. He seems fine with other dogs and appears to know basic commands. He walks well on the leash and enjoys going for leisurely walks or even just being out in the play yard. He appears housebroken. Prince is also quiet and mellow - a wonderful companion for a person of any age and welcome addition to any family. He could benefit from senior supplements/vitamins/ good quality senior food.

Please note: The Shelton Animal Shelter ONLY adopts to residents of CT. Please do not call if you live out of state. Thank you.

SHEP

Shelton Animal Shelter
Shelton, CT
203-924-2501

penumbral@sbcglobal.net

Just look at that classic German Shepherd profile on this guy! Shep came to us as a stray, severely malnourished. Despite the harsh conditions he had to endure before finding his way to us, Shep is a gentle giant who adores females but has displayed issues with males. Shep has also displayed aggression toward other dogs so would need to be the only pet. Our vet estimates Shep to be 4-5 years old. If you're looking for a big teddy bear to share a forever home with, please stop by and visit Shep at our shelter.

For All The Dogs
In  Shelters Everywhere

TWO LOST SOULS
by Shelly Guidotti

"Did you hear that?" the old dog shouted. They all ran to the front of their kennel doors to see if someone was coming to "pick them."

"Sorry," he said to the other dogs as his ears fell down from their perked position. "I could have sworn I heard voices saying,  'Isn't he cute?   Can't we take him home with us?'"

"You must have been dreaming again old man," said the dog in the cage next to him.  "Anyway, what's the big deal about getting picked ?  We've all been through that routine and look where it got us." The word "home" meant little to these shelter dogs.

"Just once, I'd like to feel the warmth of a hand stroking my head," said the old dog.  "I'd like to be the one who kisses the tears off a sad face. I'd like to curl up next to a fire instead of this cold concrete. It hurts my bones."  He curled up and sighed as the others said, "The only place you're going to find that is in your dreams old man."

* * *
Hank's wife had only been gone a year but the pain was as fresh as if time had stood still.  He was an old man now, alone and longed for the comfort that he knew no other person would ever be able to give to him again.  What would his life become without her by his side? Hank's cupboards were close to bare now and, although he didn't want to go out, he knew he should at least pick up the basics.

He drove slowly down the side streets for freeway driving had become too challenging. Suddenly, the car started chugging and sputtering until finally the engine quit altogether.  One of the basic needs he forgot was fuel for the car!  So he coasted over next to the curb, spotting a building within walking distance. Hopefully, they'd let him use their phone.

He walked into an office area and rang the bell for service but no one came.  He spotted another door going outside, failing to notice the sign posted "Employees Only". As Hank walked out, he was overwhelmed by yaps, barks and insane jumping from dogs all sizes and shapes.

He then realized he had unintentionally
gone to the dog shelter.  Slowly he walked down the concrete aisle looking for an attendant.

Three kennels down on the right, the old dog calmly sat there.  Why should the old dog get excited? No one would want him.  But, he sensed a need and couldn't resist offering a kind look and a gentle wag of the tail. As Hank neared the old dog's cage, he laced his fingers through the chain link to steady his gait and the first feeling of comfort he'd remembered in over a year came from a wet nose and lick across his arthritic fingers.

Just then a voice of authority sounded, and Hank jumped. "I'm sorry sir, you aren't supposed to be in this area!" she said. Luckily Hank didn't know he had walked into the "final area" where unclaimed dogs were scheduled to be put down.  There went the nudge and lick thing again.  Hank looked down to the most pleading eyes he'd ever seen.

Ignoring the attendants order to leave, Hank asked if could he see the dog closer? Her demeanor changed completely and her sternness melted away.  She had  forced herself to be this way so she could do the part of her job she despised.  She brought the old dog out and instantly the two souls -- once so lost -- found reason to hope.

Hank's cupboards were now filled, a warm fire crackled and the old dog Smiled inside as he remembered "only in your dreams." Closing his eyes he felt Hank's hand stroking his head whispering "sleep in heavenly peace".
