Happy-go-lucky Buddy has the German Shepherd head tilt down to a
science…so much so that it looks like its going to fall off! He is
very tactile and loves to be touched. Buddy is the “leaning into
you” type, but don’t move because he just may very well fall over!
He’s a delightful dog who wants to be near you all the time; his
foster family nicknamed him Shadow, since he’s the type of dog who
won’t leave your side.
Buddy was turned into GSRNE at 10 months old by his owner because he
was not getting along with the female Shepherd in the house. Buddy
also had a fight with a submissive female GSD at a local dog park,
which was just too much for the owner to deal with. Our coordinator
for the Working Dog Program evaluated him to see whether he could be a
potential working dog, but he wasn’t quite at that level. We brought
him into our pet program and placed him in an experienced foster home.
Since that time, he’s turned a year old and has made great strides in
meeting new people and being around other dogs. He currently resides
with two other GSD’s (female and male) and gets along famously. He
does well with other dogs that are calm and respectful of him, but
still has some issues with other dogs occasionally. He learns new
skills everyday and is loving it. No health issues ;) Want to
motivate him? Give him a treat or a ball.
And he loves to play, play, play!!! If you turn on the hose – watch
out and be prepared to get wet. Buddy is a water dog. He just loves
wading in the water and hitting it with his paw to see the water
splash and sprinkle. We think he was a lab in his former life…
Playing ball is another one of his favorite past times. Buddy also
has an adventurous side to him: he likes to go exploring. If you take
him to the woods and he finds something “new,” like a chipmunk or
mole, he wants to show it off by barking at it until you come and
investigate. So don’t forget to acknowledge his hard tracking work or
he’ll be barking all day…LOL
Buddy’s foster home has done a great job with him. He knows basic
commands (sit, down, stay, come, wait, heel, sit, drop, off and leave
it; though quiet may need a little work.) He is being crate trained
now, but he will bark for a little before settling down. Overall, he
has done very well in a short period of time. Typical of the breed,
Buddy loves to learn and please.
While this social butterfly absolutely loves people and some
other dogs, Buddy would need a strong leader to bring out the best in
him and work with his self confidence. If you nudge his belly with
your foot, he cries like you are hurting him. He also does not like
you touching his rear end too much. Buddy is somewhat spooked – not
fearful – just jumpy and startles easily. If he hears a strange
noise behind him, he will spin 180 degrees in a single jump in the air
like a cat. Buddy’s foster family has been working with him on these
issues, and his new home would need to do the same.
We do believe
that another confident dog could be okay for him (as soon as he sees
another dog, he wants to charge in and comes on too strong for most
dogs); but he'd be fine as an only dog. Since there are no cats in
his foster home, we're not sure if Buddy would do well with the
felines; his foster family has yet to see him bark at people.
Did we mention how vain Buddy is? He loves baths, getting brushed
down and even having his nails clipped. Buddy has made appearances in
many public places and he does really great. He is quite the popular
pooch with people and would be a natural on Hollywood’s red carpet
with his famous head tilt as he strikes a pose.
Adopt Buddy and you’ll have an instant friend for life.
