Everyone who has met Hooper says he is a beautiful dog with a gentle
soul. This 7-year old male came to us from a very good home, and it’s
obvious that he’s been well-loved and wants to connect with people he
meets. When his former owner had to be hospitalized, we were called
and asked if GSRNE could find another home for Hooper.
During the
evaluation at his previous home, we were given a demonstration of this
dog’s level of curiosity and personality. The evaluator’s box of
equipment was on a table out on the porch; and when Hooper wanted to
go out into the fenced yard, his owner opened the door for him. A few
minutes later, the owner and the evaluator walked outside and found
that Hooper had removed the box from the table and rummaged through
the supplies, scattering leashes, bowls, toys and treats around the
yard. He was clearly having a wonderful time entertaining himself
with all the new “stuff.”
Hooper has been in
foster care for a few months now and is doing very well. He loves
going for walks with his foster Mom and Dad, going for rides in the
car, and meeting new people. He’s very gentle when greeting adults
and children and likes to lean against you for a back rub. He’s been
calm around other dogs, showing an interest and curiosity but no
aggression.
Hooper has not
taken well to crate training and has been loose in one room while his
foster parents are at work. He’s not destructive and is completely
housetrained. Although he saw cats through the fence at his previous
home, he has never lived with one, so we don’t know how he would do
with a cat for a housemate.
The one place where
Hooper is not comfortable is at the vet’s office. He’s fine walking
in and greeting everyone; but when the vet tries to do an exam, Hooper
stiffens up and objects to being touched. His foster Mom and Dad have
been getting him used to wearing a muzzle, and they put that on before
his most recent vet visit. His adopter will have to continue working
with him to keep him used to wearing a muzzle, using treats and brief
periods to make it a good association, for those times when a visit to
the vet is necessary. Once he gets familiar with his veterinarian, we
hope he’ll become more comfortable over time.
Hooper loves to
play, but he’s not a high energy dog; daily walks, including him in
whatever you’re doing for fun, accepting his love and devotion and
enjoying his companionship will make him a very happy boy indeed. If
you can be the person Hooper is looking for, please let us know!
