Dax can be a very “in your face”
kind of guy, once he gets to know you. He’s a bit uncertain at
first and unsure in new situations; but he loves to be close to his
family members. When one of them is lying on the couch, Dax will
put his front paws and upper body on top of the person. He knows
he’s going to be told “off,” so he’ll hide his face in the pillows
and pretend not to hear the command. At 13 months old, he can still
act like a puppy, but he’s growing into a handsome adult.
He plays very well with his foster
sister, Blossom, also a GSD. They love their chase games, and Dax
will need a home where he can continue getting regular play and
exercise. Having a confident older female dog in the home, to be a
role model, will be a big help with continuing the socialization and
training Dax still needs.
He can be like a bull in a china
shop, and his foster Mom describes the way he would startle when his
wagging tail hit the china closet and made a noise. Dax would jump
and look to see what had happened, turn back and wag his tail into
the cabinet again and repeat the whole process. He does keep his
foster family entertained!
Dax has been unsure when meeting
other dogs, except for Blossom, and he’s learning to walk with a
Gentle Leader in order to keep him from pulling when out walking.
He needs someone experienced with German Shepherds, because he tends
to push the limits and will try to take advantage of an inconsistent
leader.
Going up and down stairs was a
challenge for Dax at first but he has now mastered going up. He
has developed his own technique for coming down the stairs and will
put both front feet on the step and then hop down to the next one.
When he’s settled on the floor, he looks for something to chew and
will appreciate an assortment of chew proof items to work on…tough
toys, rope toys, etc. He also likes to have an occasional marrow
bone (in his crate to insure there is not any conflicts between dogs
over such a high value item).
Dax has been described as being
friendly, goofy, playful, entertaining; but he’s also insecure and
can be independent at times. We’re looking for an adopter who has
the right combination of skills to enjoy all that Dax has to offer!
